A U.S. ban on several Canadian imports, including alcohol, dairy products and motorcycles, has taken effect, as trade talks between the two countries remain stalled. The Trump administration imposed the measure after Canada introduced tariffs on a range of U.S. goods earlier this month following a breakdown in negotiations.
About 90% of Canadian alcohol exports went to the United States in 2025, with most originating in Ontario, the BBC reported. The New York Times reported that dairy products were among those targeted and that experts said the affected goods represented only a small share of Canada’s exports. Prime Minister Mark Carney said earlier this month that the economic effect would be "modest," and Canada is not expected to impose further retaliation. U.S. trade representative Jamieson Greer said there was no urgency for a deal.
