Trump Administration Threatens Demolition of Kennedy Center Amid Renovation Dispute

The Trump administration has threatened to demolish the Kennedy Center if it is not permitted to close the facility for two years to conduct renovations. Justice Department attorney Brantley T. Mayers stated in a court filing on Monday that without the renovations, the Center would deteriorate into an unsafe structure that would need to be taken down. The filing also mentioned a proposed outdoor amphitheater overlooking the Potomac River, which some have suggested for many years, but noted that such a structure would not adequately honor President John F. Kennedy. The DOJ described the Kennedy Center as 'structurally unsound, fundamentally unsafe, and embarrassing to the Nation’s Capital.' This filing represents a shift from the language used by Kennedy Center Executive Director Matt Floca, who previously described the renovations as necessary for a total replacement of stage lifts and rigging systems, along with electrical work and leak prevention. Floca indicated that these renovations could be completed within two years if the Center was closed during the work. The administration has invested significant time and resources in planning for the renovations, which Mayers argued President Trump is uniquely qualified to oversee due to his real estate and construction experience. The filing was made in opposition to a motion from Rep. Joyce Beatty, D-Ohio, who has criticized the closure decision as rushed and lacking sufficient information for board members. Beatty is also contesting the board's attempt to add Trump's name to the front of the building, which was previously ruled unlawful by a judge. A hearing on the name change and closure is scheduled for Thursday afternoon.
