Trump Administration Lawyers Warn of Deterioration of Kennedy Center Amid Renovation Dispute

Lawyers for the Trump administration stated that the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts may need to be 'taken down' if renovation efforts backed by Donald Trump do not proceed. In a court filing on Monday, they indicated that without these renovations, the Center could further deteriorate into an unsafe structure, necessitating its removal and potential replacement with a proposed outdoor amphitheater overlooking the Potomac River. They argued that such a replacement would not honor President John F. Kennedy adequately but would be simpler and more economical to construct and maintain. The filing was a response to an emergency motion from U.S. Representative Joyce Beatty of Ohio, who successfully sued for the removal of Trump's name from the Center's façade. Following the removal of Trump's name earlier this year, Beatty filed a new motion after the board voted to restore it. The proposed restoration includes Trump's name appearing twice on the building's front portico, along with the designation of the site as 'President Donald J. Trump Plaza.' In their opposition, administration lawyers accused Beatty of being motivated by partisanship and stated that blocking the board's recognition of Trump would lead to a loss of donors and financial contributions, halting structural rehabilitation. U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper, who ordered the previous removal, has scheduled a hearing for Thursday.
