Pattaya Implements Prostitution Crackdown Ahead of USS Abraham Lincoln's Arrival

<p>A Thai resort city has initiated a crackdown on prostitution in anticipation of the arrival of 5,000 U.S. sailors and Marines who have been deployed at sea in the Middle East for several months.</p><p>The USS Abraham Lincoln docked near Pattaya, a prominent nightlife area in Thailand, on Wednesday, accompanied by two other naval vessels, as reported by The Independent.</p><p>Pattaya police chief Anek Srathongyoo stated on Monday, "We are doing our best, but it is difficult," regarding the department's efforts to reduce prostitution in the city.</p><p>The police initiative includes increased patrols in beachfront and nightlife areas, as well as raids conducted over the weekend that resulted in more than 50 arrests on suspicion of prostitution.</p><p>Despite prostitution being illegal in Thailand, cities like Bangkok and Pattaya are known for their sex tourism.</p><p>The USS Abraham Lincoln, based in San Diego, departed in November and was redirected to the Middle East amid tensions related to the U.S. war with Iran.</p><p>Concerns have been raised regarding the prolonged deployment, including reports of health issues, deteriorating conditions aboard the ship, and low morale among the crew.</p><p>Pattaya Mayor Poramase Ngampiches expressed optimism that the arrival of American service members would positively impact the local economy.</p><p>According to the mayor, each service member could spend approximately $30 to $90 per day, depending on their accommodations and duration of stay.</p><p>Lisa Hamilton, president of the Pattaya Nightlife Business Association, remarked, "When we heard the news that a U.S. Navy warship would be docking in Pattaya, it became a source of hope for us." Pattaya evolved from a small fishing village into a significant tourism destination largely due to U.S. military personnel seeking leisure during the Vietnam War.</p>
