EU Plans Investment Package for Greenland Amid US Interest

The European Union is preparing a significant investment package and plans to strengthen political ties with Greenland, a Danish territory, in response to former President Donald Trump's calls for increased US control over the island. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is visiting Greenland for two days as the EU aims to enhance its investment in the region amidst concerns over potential US annexation. Von der Leyen arrived in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, on Sunday and was welcomed by Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. In a post on social media platform X, she stated that the EU is dedicated to contributing to a secure and peaceful Arctic, as well as ensuring the security of Greenland. The investment package is anticipated to amount to hundreds of millions of euros, although specific details were not disclosed. Prime Minister Nielsen characterized the visit as a chance to strengthen Greenland's partnership with the EU. Greenland, which has a population of approximately 57,000, left the EU in 1985 but its residents are EU citizens through Denmark. The visit occurs as the Arctic's strategic significance grows for the US, Russia, China, and Europe, with melting ice creating new shipping routes and access to mineral resources. Trump has expressed that the US 'needs' Greenland for national security, alleging without evidence that the island is frequented by Chinese and Russian ships. He has claimed that Denmark is unable to sufficiently defend Greenland against these nations. Trump's efforts to gain 'total access' to Greenland have caused strain in US-European relations and heightened tensions within NATO, as both Greenland and Denmark have rejected his requests.
