Israeli Air Strikes in Southern Lebanon Result in 12 Fatalities

Israeli air strikes on a village in southern Lebanon have resulted in the deaths of at least 12 individuals, according to the Lebanese health ministry. Eleven people, including two children and four women, were killed in a strike that destroyed a residential building in Kfar Roummane overnight. A second strike on a vehicle killed a paramedic. The Israeli military stated that it targeted infrastructure sites belonging to the Shia Muslim armed group Hezbollah, as well as 'several terrorists' transferring weapons, in response to a drone attack on troops in an occupied area of the country. Over the past three days, Israeli attacks across southern Lebanon have resulted in at least 27 fatalities, according to the health ministry. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun described the situation as a 'dangerous escalation' that threatens a ceasefire brokered by the US in June, which aimed to resolve the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. He called on the international community to pressure Israel to cease its attacks. The Israeli military has intensified its strikes in southern Lebanon recently, particularly in areas near the territory occupied by Israeli troops, prompting many residents to flee. The latest attacks targeted Kfar Roummane in the Nabatieh district, located just a few hundred meters from what the Israeli military refers to as its 'security zone.' The first air strike destroyed a three-storey residential building near the Shuyuiya roundabout shortly after midnight, as reported by Lebanon's state-run National News Agency. In addition to the 11 fatalities, eight individuals were reported injured, including three children and a paramedic associated with the Islamic Health Association, linked to Hezbollah. The second strike targeted a vehicle carrying paramedics from the Islamic Risala Scout Association, resulting in one death and two injuries. The health ministry stated that the death toll is further evidence of serious violations of international humanitarian law by the Israeli occupation, particularly in targeting medics and children. A resident of Kfar Roummane, Sara Moallaem, reported that she was asleep with her five children when the explosions occurred. She moved her children to a safe room while waiting for the situation to stabilize. Some of the deceased were relatives of her husband, whom she described as civilians without ties to Hezbollah. She expressed her intention to relocate her family to the coastal city of Sidon for safety. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) claimed responsibility for striking 'several Hezbollah terrorist infrastructure sites across southern Lebanon' after Hezbollah fighters launched two explosive drones towards Israeli troops in the Ali al-Taher ridge area, located just south of Kfar Roummane. The IDF stated that it also targeted individuals identified as transferring weapons in Kfar Roummane to mitigate the threat to its soldiers. The IDF is reviewing claims that uninvolved individuals were harmed during the strikes. The conflict has resulted in at least 4,362 fatalities in Lebanon, including 395 women and 259 children, according to the health ministry, which does not differentiate between combatants and civilians. Israeli authorities report that 40 Israeli soldiers and four civilians have died during the conflict.
