Trump threatens to block Bombardier sales in the US unless manufacturing occurs domestically

United States President Donald Trump stated that Canada-based aeroplane maker Bombardier will no longer be able to sell its planes in the US unless they begin manufacturing in the United States. Trump made these comments in a social media post on Monday, asserting, "NO MORE SELLING BOMBARDIER IN THE UNITED STATES! Their products aren’t good enough! If they want our Market, they must build here, and stop treating America like a ‘piggybank.’" This statement comes amid rising tensions between the US and Canada, which have historically maintained close relations. Trump has previously imposed tariffs on Canadian products, leading to retaliatory measures from Canada. These tariffs, which are set to take effect on early Tuesday, will cover nearly $20 billion worth of 700 different US goods. The negotiations between the two countries have reportedly deteriorated in recent weeks. This is not the first instance of Trump targeting Bombardier since he returned to office in 2025. In January, shares of Bombardier fell after Trump threatened to decertify the private jet maker’s large-cabin planes and impose a 50 percent import tariff on new planes until Canada certified the latest aircraft produced by US competitor Gulfstream. Trump remarked, "Over 50% of their revenue comes from the United States — They live off American Buyers, American Companies, American Airports, and American Service. Canada blocks our GREAT American Banks, and Companies, throughout the USA. They even blocked Gulfstream Aerospace from doing business in Canada — Completely unjust and unfair! That Era is OVER!" This potential move could impact large private jet companies, including NetJets, which is one of Bombardier’s significant purchasers. In December 2023, NetJets signed a deal with Bombardier to purchase 12 Challenger 3500 jets outright, with an option to buy up to another 232 aircraft later. Bombardier did not respond to Al Jazeera’s request for comment.
