Security Measures Implemented for GOP Midterm Convention in Dallas

Downtown Dallas will host the first GOP midterm convention beginning Wednesday. The event is expected to attract approximately 20,000 visitors, including President Trump and Vice President JD Vance, who will speak at the American Airlines Center (AAC). Due to the high-profile nature of the event, security checkpoints have been established in the area surrounding Victory Park and the AAC. According to CBS News' Briseida Holguin, anyone driving or walking through the designated zone will need to show ID or documentation explaining their presence in the area. Security barricades and checkpoints were set up as of Monday at 5 a.m. CT, and construction was ongoing for tents, gates, and a speaker stage in an outdoor atrium outside the AAC. The checkpoints are expected to remain in place through Friday. Unlike typical conventions, this event will serve as a two-day campaign rally, where Trump and Vance will promote Republican Congressional candidates and their agenda. RNC Chairman Joe Gruters stated that the convention will highlight Trump's accomplishments and commitment to the America First agenda. Trump is scheduled to speak on both nights, delivering the closing keynote address on Thursday. Tickets and honorary delegate credentials were available for purchase at $10,000, while other Republicans were invited at no charge, with a free lottery also offered prior to the event.
