The letter warned that the PAC could face an audit or enforcement action if it fails to adequately explain the reported spending. This request comes as Newsom, who is under investigation by the Department of Justice, embarks on a tour of the South, including meetings with community leaders in Alabama and political rallies in South Carolina.
Newsom's camp has characterized the trip as an initiative to bolster support for Democrats ahead of the upcoming midterm elections, while he is also anticipated to run for president in 2028. South Carolina has been designated to hold the first Democratic presidential primary in January 2028, and Newsom has openly acknowledged his presidential ambitions during this tour.
The FEC's letter highlights concerns regarding payments labeled as 'Travel and Event Reimbursement,' indicating that federal disclosure rules may require campaigns to identify the businesses that received the reimbursed funds. The commission has requested the PAC to provide the necessary information by October 6, or to explain when additional itemization was not required. Failure to respond adequately could lead to an audit or enforcement action.
The letter was addressed to Analea Patterson, who became the treasurer of the Campaign for Democracy PAC in April. Patterson is married to Newsom's chief of staff, Nathan Barankin. The PAC has reported approximately $14 million in total assets, financing various political activities as Newsom expands his national presence.
According to filings, the PAC reported over $73,000 in payments categorized as 'Travel and Event Reimbursement' from April to June, with significant amounts paid to individuals and firms. The FEC's letter does not accuse Newsom or his PAC of any violations of federal law, and Newsom's communications director stated that the PAC is fully compliant and will respond to the request. As of June 30, the PAC had $7.1 million in cash on hand and had spent nearly $344,000 in the same period. Newsom's political operation has reportedly raised $2.3 million for Democrats across the South since 2023.
