NATO Jets Shoot Down Drone Entering Lithuanian Airspace

NATO fighter pilots shot down a drone that entered Lithuania's airspace overnight, according to Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda. Authorities indicated that the drone likely entered southern Lithuania, near Kaunas, from Belarus shortly after midnight on Tuesday. Nausėda stated on social media, "A drone that just entered Lithuanian airspace was destroyed by NATO fighter jets." The origins of the drone remain undetermined, as noted by a spokesperson for the Lithuanian national crisis management center. Earlier on Tuesday, drone alerts were activated across Vilnius and the surrounding region. Lithuania's Ministry of Defence reported that the armed forces and Italian pilots serving in the NATO Air Defence Mission responded swiftly to the incursion. Nausėda emphasized the importance of readiness in light of Russia's increased aggression against Ukraine, stating, "Together with our NATO Allies, Lithuania will defend its airspace." Moscow has not commented on the incident. Lithuania shares a significant portion of its southern and eastern border with Belarus, a key ally of Russia. On Sunday, drone sightings were reported in Lithuania, with the crisis management center later indicating that an object likely entered from Belarus and traversed the country before entering Russian airspace. This incident on September 13 did not trigger air threat alerts. Military drone incursions have become more frequent across Europe since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Poland also reported "aviation operations" in its airspace on Monday night due to the activity of Russian jet-powered unmanned aerial vehicles conducting strikes on Ukraine. These operations are described as "preventive" and aimed at securing airspace, particularly in areas near threatened regions. In May, residents in Vilnius were forced to take shelter during a drone alert, which temporarily grounded flights and rail travel. NATO jets have previously scrambled to intercept stray Ukrainian drones that crossed into Estonia and Latvia this year. Ukraine has attributed these stray drones to Russian electronic warfare technology, which is designed to alter the flight paths of Ukrainian drones. Lithuania, Estonia, and Latvia joined NATO in 2004 and are signatories to Article 5, which states that an armed attack against one NATO member is considered an attack against all members.
