Donald Trump Jr. and his wife, Bettina Trump, confirmed that their wedding in May was partially funded by Umar Kremlev, a Russian oligarch with ties to President Vladimir Putin. The couple stated on Instagram that Kremlev hosted two nights of their three-day wedding festivities on a private island in the Bahamas. This statement followed a report by ProPublica, which detailed that Kremlev paid 'hundreds of thousands of dollars' for the celebration.
Donald Trump Jr., the son of former President Donald Trump, is a private citizen, and it is not illegal for him to accept gifts from foreign nationals. The couple expressed gratitude for Kremlev's generosity, stating, "Our dear friend Umar very generously hosted two incredible nights of celebrations for us AFTER our wedding. It was an extraordinarily generous wedding gift from a friend, and something for which we were and remain incredibly grateful."
However, ethics watchdog groups raised concerns about the potential conflict of interest, suggesting that accepting such gifts from someone associated with a foreign head of state could be problematic. Jordan Libowitz, vice president of communications for Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), commented, "People don't just give hundreds of thousands of dollars to a random acquaintance without wanting something."
ProPublica's article noted that the couple was married on a private island and held a two-day celebration on another island that costs about $100,000 per night. Kremlev also funded a fireworks display costing approximately $70,000. Kremlev is the head of the International Boxing Association (IBA), which has faced scrutiny for its connections to the state-backed Gazprom energy company.
Earlier this year, Kremlev was part of a delegation that visited China with Putin and received the Order of Friendship from the Russian president. A spokesperson for Donald Trump Jr. stated that he and Kremlev are personal friends without a business relationship. Kremlev's office confirmed their friendly relationship, noting they met a few years ago.
Kremlev attended part of the wedding, which was also attended by Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner. The Trump family has faced scrutiny over potential ties to Russia, particularly during the 2016 presidential election, which led to a special counsel investigation. Libowitz remarked that either Donald Trump or Donald Trump Jr. could have financed the wedding to avoid ethical concerns, stating, "Clearly they just didn't want to pay for it. They don't really care about the ethical ramifications."
