Senator Peter Welch, D-Vt., expressed concerns during a Senate Judiciary Committee oversight hearing on Tuesday regarding FBI Director Kash Patel's willingness to investigate President Donald Trump's grievances related to past election losses. Welch noted that Trump has claimed the upcoming midterm elections will be rigged if he loses.
Welch inquired whether Patel agrees with Trump's assertion made during this year's State of the Union address that Democrats must cheat to win elections. Patel responded, stating, "Based upon the Russiagate hoax and everything else that's happened, the president is completely justified in making his opinions known, as does any president before him."
The discussion intensified when Welch questioned Patel about the potential deployment of FBI agents to polling places. Patel accused Welch of lying about the FBI's involvement, to which Welch asked if Patel would commit to not interfering with the electoral process in November. Patel replied, "I have pledged unequivocally that I will not participate in your charade of lies."
Patel's testimony was part of a broader oversight hearing concerning the FBI's operations.
