Talarico has been actively targeting Paxton through substantial advertising efforts, branding him as 'the most corrupt politician in Texas.'</p><p>In response to Talarico's criticisms, Republicans have highlighted his financial ties to MAYA Consulting, which received millions in state contracts from the Texas Education Agency (TEA) during Talarico's tenure on the Public Education Committee. Talarico announced his consulting role with MAYA in a 2019 Facebook post, stating his commitment to improving educational opportunities.</p><p>According to financial disclosures, Talarico worked with MAYA Consulting, now known as VIDA Collaborative, from 2019 until 2025. During that time, he served on the Public Education Committee, which oversees the TEA. Records indicate that the TEA awarded contracts to MAYA worth $3.578 million and $1.635 million in 2021 and 2022, respectively, related to initiatives Talarico supported.</p><p>Talarico's financial disclosure shows he earned $83,333.40 from MAYA in 2025, alongside his part-time salary of $13,904.92 as a Texas House member. Kassi Longoria, CEO of VIDA Collaborative, confirmed Talarico's role as an independent contractor and stated that he had no current affiliation with the organization. She emphasized that Talarico's consulting work was structured to remain separate from his legislative duties.</p><p>Republican National Committee spokesman Zach Kraft accused Talarico of engaging in 'blatant corruption,' alleging that he directed taxpayer funds to his consulting agency in exchange for compensation. However, Talarico was not involved in the TEA's contract award process and did not vote on those contracts. There is no evidence that he received a commission for contracts awarded to MAYA, a claim denied by both Talarico's campaign and the consulting firm.</p><p>Kraft further criticized Talarico, labeling him as 'one of the most morally bankrupt individuals to ever run for public office in Texas.' Talarico's spokesperson responded by asserting that the allegations are false and that his relationship with MAYA was disclosed in accordance with Texas House rules. Talarico's campaign also highlighted Paxton's legal troubles, including impeachment and fraud charges, as a distraction from the current allegations.</p><p>In previous legal issues, Paxton was indicted in 2015 for misleading investors but had the charges dropped in 2024 under a deal requiring restitution and community service.
