Overnight missile and drone attacks targeted several regions in Ukraine as world leaders convene in New York for the UN General Assembly. Russian forces conducted extensive strikes aimed at industrial sites and critical energy infrastructure, resulting in the deaths of at least three individuals and leaving nearly 100,000 residents without power, according to Ukrainian officials.
The attacks affected industrial facilities in the Dnipropetrovsk region, including Dnipro, Pavlohrad, and Kryvyi Rih, which is the hometown of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, as reported by regional Governor Oleksandr Hanzha on Telegram on Tuesday. In Dnipro, three people were killed and six others injured due to significant damage to business and warehouse premises caused by missiles, drones, and artillery.
Ukraine’s air force reported that the overnight assault involved 212 drones, four cruise missiles, and an unspecified number of Oniks antiship and ballistic missiles. The strikes also impacted energy infrastructure, with an attack on a power facility in the northern region of Chernihiv leaving nearly 100,000 consumers without electricity. In the Poltava region, Governor Vitalii Diakivnych noted that a substantial Russian attack targeted an industrial enterprise and a critical infrastructure facility.
The Russian Ministry of Defence confirmed that its forces executed major strikes, claiming to have targeted industrial and military facilities, the fuel and energy sector, port infrastructure, and sea vessels associated with the Ukrainian military. Concurrently, Ukrainian drones struck Russia’s Samara region along the Volga River, resulting in one death and four injuries, according to the local governor. This region is home to vital facilities, including oil refineries.
The Russian Defence Ministry stated that its air defence units intercepted and destroyed 297 Ukrainian drones across various regions overnight. These attacks coincide with President Zelenskyy’s arrival in New York for the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), where discussions on ending the war are anticipated to be a primary focus as nearly 130 heads of state gather.
Zelenskyy announced on X that a “drone deal” is ready to be signed to enhance air defence and secure funding for the war effort. He emphasized that Ukraine’s top priority is to bring peace closer and protect its citizens. “There are concrete security proposals and de-escalation measures that could bring the end of the war closer. We are working to strengthen air defence and ensure sufficient financing for Ukraine,” he stated.
Zelenskyy mentioned that around 20 meetings are scheduled, including discussions with the US president, European leaders, US senators, members of the House of Representatives, heads of international organizations, and leading American companies and think tanks. He met with French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday and is expected to meet with US President Donald Trump on Tuesday. Earlier, Macron and Trump agreed to collaborate on securing a moratorium on strikes targeting energy networks and civilian infrastructure in Ukraine. Both Zelenskyy and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov are set to address the UNGA later this week.
