Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian met with Pakistani Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi in Tehran on Monday, marking Naqvi's sixth visit since the onset of hostilities involving the United States and Israel against Iran in February. The meeting occurred amid efforts by Pakistan and Qatar to revive diplomatic relations with the US, following concerns about escalating regional tensions.
Pezeshkian expressed a desire for stronger ties between Iran and Pakistan, stating, "We believe that US actions and pressures have contributed to greater convergence and continued engagement among Islamic countries, and the numerous meetings and consultations between Iranian and Pakistani delegations are a clear example of this trend."
Naqvi acknowledged the high level of relations between the two nations, saying, "We believe that relations between Iran and Pakistan have never been at such a high level as they are today."
In a separate development, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in New York to participate in the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), with a brief stop in Doha to discuss regional matters with Qatari officials. Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman, Majed al-Ansari, reiterated Qatar's role in mediating discussions between Tehran and Washington, stating that Doha aims to facilitate a dialogue between the two nations.
Pezeshkian is expected to address the UNGA and engage with various world leaders during his visit. While the US granted visas to Pezeshkian and Araghchi, it imposed travel and purchasing restrictions on the rest of the Iranian delegation.
In an interview, US President Donald Trump mentioned he was considering multiple options regarding Iran, including potential military action or negotiations. Additionally, Mohsen Rezaei, Iran’s top security official, indicated that Tehran had presented new conditions to the Trump administration for resuming talks, following a previous memorandum of understanding that did not resolve ongoing conflicts.
