Poland Issues Preparedness Advice Following Russian Helicopter Incursion

A Russian Mi-8 helicopter crossed approximately 1,000 feet into NATO airspace this week, leading to warnings for residents in Poland regarding preparedness. The helicopter originated from the Kaliningrad region and flew over Polish territory for around 42 seconds, prompting NATO fighter jets to scramble in response. Polish officials view the incident as a deliberate test of NATO defenses and a reminder for citizens to be prepared for potential emergencies. Radosław Sikorski, Poland's deputy prime minister and foreign minister, stated that he has prepared an evacuation backpack amid concerns of a possible war. He mentioned having food supplies and safety instructions ready, encouraging citizens to heed government advice on preparedness. The Polish Armed Forces confirmed that the helicopter's flight was monitored by their radar systems and that ground forces remained on alert. They indicated that the incident reflects Russia's ongoing testing of Poland's air defense capabilities. Earlier this year, the EU advised its citizens to prepare for emergencies by assembling '72-hour survival kits.'
