Following a summit between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, the United States and China have agreed to establish a communication channel for incidents related to artificial intelligence (AI) and enhance coordination on military matters. The two nations have committed to expanding dialogue on AI safety and military communications while also reducing tariffs on approximately $30 billion (€26.3 billion) of non-sensitive goods.
The agreements were made during a three-day summit held in the US. President Trump characterized the summit in an online post as 'one of Friendship, Strength, and Success' for both countries. In contrast, President Xi emphasized the importance of 'strategic stability on the basis of respect, fairness, and reciprocity.'
Upon returning to Beijing, President Xi's administration confirmed the mutual tariff reduction, which will apply to exports such as agricultural products and holiday decorations. The Chinese Foreign Ministry stated, 'Artificial intelligence technologies are continuously developing; all parties can strengthen exchanges, discuss in-depth, and seek consensus in light of the latest situation.' A new round of AI-focused dialogue is scheduled for November.
Additionally, both nations will expedite their efforts on military crisis communications, although specific details were not disclosed. The US had previously announced an extension of the 'trade truce' established by Trump and Xi in Busan last October, which was set to expire on November 10. According to US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, this agreement will remain effective until January.
The White House also indicated that discussions included American concerns regarding the supply of rare earths, aiming to ensure shipment levels return to appropriate levels. Furthermore, China has agreed to import at least 10 million metric tons of coal from the US in 2027 and 2028.
While the issue of Iran was also discussed during the talks, no significant breakthroughs were reported. However, the Chinese Foreign Ministry stated that both sides concurred that Iran should not possess nuclear weapons and that no country should impose transit tolls on international waterways, specifically referencing the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump and Xi are expected to meet twice more by the end of the year, with Trump likely attending the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in China in November and Xi expected to return to the US for a G20 summit in December, which will be hosted at Trump's National Doral Miami golf club.
