Dario Amodei, the chief executive of Anthropic, is scheduled to have dinner with President Trump at the White House on Sunday night. This meeting follows Amodei's previous comments advocating for a slowdown in the development of artificial intelligence (A.I.), which Trump has dismissed.
The dinner is part of the Trump administration's increasing engagement with A.I. and technology executives amid concerns regarding the risks associated with artificial intelligence. Earlier in the week, Trump hosted other A.I. executives during a state dinner for President Xi Jinping of China and is set to hold a summit with technology leaders to discuss A.I. and launch a new government website aimed at assisting Americans with federal information.
Amodei, who co-founded Anthropic and is known for his warnings about A.I. safety risks, called for global cooperation in establishing regulations for A.I. development earlier this month. Trump has publicly rejected these concerns, stating, "The Trump Administration has stopped AI ‘people’ from doing bad, or potentially bad, ‘things,’ like Dario (Anthropic!), who is now pretending to be a ‘perfect little angel.’"
While Trump has referred to serious threats posed by A.I. as a "hoax," some members of his administration have advocated for a more cautious approach. The upcoming dinner may indicate a willingness from Trump to consider these warnings.
Both the White House and Anthropic declined to comment on the dinner. The relationship between the Trump administration and Anthropic has been strained, particularly after the company was barred from working with the federal government due to disagreements over a $200 million contract related to the use of its A.I. technology. The Pentagon later classified Anthropic as a "supply chain risk to national security," which has limited its ability to collaborate with military contractors.
A recent federal appeals court ruling upheld the administration's decision to label Anthropic a national security risk, leaving the company in a challenging position that Amodei may address during the dinner with Trump.
