Senator John Fetterman mistakenly identifies as 'lifelong Republican' at Texas Tribune Festival

<p>Senator John Fetterman, D-PA, made a mistake during a speaking event on Saturday at the Texas Tribune Festival when he referred to himself as a "lifelong Republican." He quickly corrected himself, stating that he has no intention of leaving the Democratic Party.</p><p>The comment arose in response to a question from an attendee about why Fetterman does not run as an independent. "Because I’m a lifelong Republican," he said, before realizing his error. "I guarantee you that will break through. That will get clipped."</p><p>Fetterman had previously delivered a keynote address at the event, where he discussed his criticisms of both the Republican and Democratic parties. He expressed that he does not have a reason to join the Republican Party, stating, "But for a big-tent situation, it’s easier to be included in that big tent to say America deserved 9/11 or America is worse than Al-Qaida than being very proud to stand on the side of Israel."</p><p>He acknowledged that he sees "no path as a Republican" but noted that many Democrats are frustrated by his willingness to collaborate with the opposing party. "If the Democratic Party votes me out or expels me, they’re always entitled to do that," he said.</p><p>Fetterman has received invitations from Republicans to join their party after he hinted at leaving the Democratic caucus. This speculation increased when he introduced his colleague, Senator Dave McCormick, R-Pa., at the Republican National Committee’s midterm convention earlier this month.</p><p>Despite these developments, Fetterman has consistently affirmed his ties to the Democratic Party, even as he faces criticism from within. He began his Senate career in 2022 after defeating Dr. Mehmet Oz, securing a narrow Democratic majority while running on a progressive platform.</p><p>Since taking office, Fetterman has challenged the direction of the Democratic Party and warned earlier this year that he might leave if the party became more entrenched in anti-Israel policies. He has also criticized the party's direction during the current midterm election cycle, as far-left progressives have emerged as prominent figures.</p>
