Sen. John Fetterman discusses potential for Democratic Senate control and his political future

Democratic Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania stated on Saturday that it is "entirely possible" for the Democratic Party to regain control of the Senate in the upcoming midterm elections. He made these comments during an interview with CBS News' Major Garrett at the Texas Tribune Festival in Austin. Fetterman indicated that he would revisit discussions about his political future after the midterms, saying, "Let's revisit after the midterm." Currently, the Senate has 53 Republicans, presenting a challenging landscape for Democrats seeking a majority. However, Fetterman noted that ongoing affordability issues and the unpopularity of the war with Iran could improve Democrats' chances. Fetterman, who won a significant victory for Democrats in 2022, has faced scrutiny for his occasional divergence from party lines. When asked if he would leave the Democratic Party, he responded that he has no reason to do so and emphasized, "I am not a Republican." He remarked that there are no Republicans who align with his voting record, which he described as having a 90% Democratic vote line. He also mentioned that he has no intention of becoming a Republican, despite previously appearing at a Republican midterm convention. Fetterman stated, "There are no pro-choice, there's no pro-gay community, that does not exist in the Republican Party." He expressed that the outcome of the midterms will influence his decisions moving forward, including a potential reelection campaign in 2028. Fetterman highlighted the need for the Democratic Party to address its current state and referenced recent wins by progressive Democrats. He also discussed his commitment to Israel and his stance against government shutdowns, stating, "Do you think it's right and smart to shut our government down? No, Democrats, we used to say, 'No, never, never do that.'" Fetterman expressed his belief in prioritizing the country over party lines, acknowledging that this may lead to conflicts within his caucus. Regarding Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, Fetterman affirmed his support, stating, "Yes, I mean, there's no one making a move." He commented on a recent Marist poll showing Democratic candidate Josh Turek leading in Iowa, calling it "shocking," and praised Schumer's recruitment efforts for strong candidates. Fetterman concluded that discussions about party leadership and strategy are premature until after the midterms.
