Trump Invites Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei to Dinner Amid AI Concerns

<p>Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei will meet with President Trump for a one-on-one dinner on Sunday night, following Amodei's absence from a state dinner for Chinese President Xi Jinping due to a scheduling conflict. The White House did not respond to inquiries regarding the dinner. Axios reported that the invitation from Trump marks a potential improvement in relations between Anthropic and the administration, which has experienced tensions in the past.</p><p>David Sacks, Trump's former AI czar, criticized Anthropic on his All-In podcast, questioning the company's ability to pursue an initial public offering while its leadership expresses concerns about the potential for AI to cause human extinction. Sacks stated, “You have current leadership in the company saying that there’s a greater than 10% chance of causing human extinction, and their own product is unsolved in this area … How do you IPO with your own management of the company saying that?”</p><p>Sacks also highlighted the contradiction between Anthropic's warnings about biological risks associated with AI and its expansion into that field, noting the company's recent announcement of a new bio lab in San Francisco.</p><p>Amodei has advocated for government regulations on AI companies as they advance, despite Anthropic's ongoing development of more powerful AI models. This contradiction has been satirized on Saturday Night Live, where Amodei was portrayed discussing the risks of AI.</p><p>The dinner occurs two days before Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson are scheduled to meet with top AI executives at the White House, amid increasing pressure on Republicans to regulate the AI industry ahead of the midterm elections. A recent Microsoft-Gallup survey indicated that 93% of Chinese respondents believe AI will mostly benefit people in their country, compared to only 36% of Americans.</p><p>Anthropic has faced scrutiny from the Pentagon throughout the year, culminating in a public dispute over the military's use of its technology. The Pentagon requested access to Anthropic's models for lawful purposes, while Amodei sought assurances against their use in mass surveillance or autonomous weapons. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth labeled Anthropic a “Supply-Chain Risk to National Security,” asserting that the company was attempting to control military operations.</p><p>As a result, military contractors and partners were prohibited from engaging in commercial activities with Anthropic, and the Pentagon announced plans to transition away from the company's technology over six months. This designation followed a directive from Trump, who ordered federal agencies to cease using Anthropic's tools, labeling the company as a “RADICAL LEFT, WOKE COMPANY” that jeopardizes national security.</p><p>The legal battle over this designation continues, with a divided panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit recently upholding one of the Pentagon's supply-chain-risk designations. An Anthropic spokesperson stated, “We remain confident in our position and are considering all options, including further review.”</p>
