Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has unveiled its first all-electric model, the Type 01, in New York, marking a significant shift for the brand. The vehicle is a four-door Grand Tourer, designed to evoke the classic 1960s E-Type. The Type 01 features electric motors that produce approximately 1000 horsepower, enabling acceleration from 0 to 62 mph in 3.2 seconds, and offers a range of up to 320 miles at sustained highway speeds. The starting price for the vehicle is £130,000.
The launch follows a controversial rebranding effort by JLR, which included a surreal advertisement and brightly colored concept cars that received backlash for being perceived as 'woke.' Critics argued that the brand was distancing itself from its heritage. Despite the criticism, automotive analyst Matthias Schmidt noted that the controversy helped keep Jaguar in the public eye during a challenging time for the brand, which has struggled to compete in the luxury market.
JLR has committed to investing £15 billion in new models and technologies as part of its strategy to reinvent Jaguar as a luxury electric brand. The Type 01 is expected to be the first of three new electric designs. However, industry experts express uncertainty about whether the Jaguar brand can attract enough buyers willing to invest in the new model, given the competitive landscape that includes established brands like Porsche and Mercedes-AMG, as well as emerging competitors from China. Automotive journalist Steve Fowler emphasized that while the car itself may meet expectations, the brand's ability to resonate with consumers remains to be seen.
