Democratic Texas Senate candidate James Talarico was seen on the campaign trail for the first time after a 13-day absence, which led to speculation regarding his health.

Talarico's absence began late last month during a critical phase of the Senate race. His campaign informed the media on Friday that he had been diagnosed with the flu and would return to campaigning over the weekend. He made his public reappearance one day before the weekend, engaging with voters at the Austin City Limits Music Festival.

Videos shared on social media depicted Talarico interacting with attendees, taking photos, shaking hands, and conversing with voters at the festival.

His absence had drawn attention, with some Republicans questioning the legitimacy of his claims of illness. His Republican opponent, Ken Paxton, suggested that Talarico might be experiencing a mental health crisis.

“Jimmy appears to be having a full-blown mental Tala-freak-out on the national stage,” Paxton posted on X. “My campaign has a simple request: proof of life.”

Paxton's post included a parody “Wanted” poster stating, “Use caution when approaching! Talarico is mentally fragile, easily overwhelmed, and prone to illness.” This narrative gained traction among Republicans and was amplified by the Republican National Committee and President Donald Trump.

On Friday, former Los Angeles mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt contributed to the speculation by claiming that sources indicated Talarico was in a mental health facility and that his campaign had halted event planning.

“If this is true, this is actually a time to pray for Talarico. We should, of course, savagely mock his smug, awful campaign advisors, by all means … and while yes, of course, this would be disqualifying for Talarico’s aspirations to be a Texas Senator, we must hold empathy for anyone undergoing crisis. Campaigns are brutal, and not everybody is cut out for it,” Pratt posted on X.

After Talarico was seen in public, Pratt suggested that his post had “smoked him out of hiding.”

The Texas Senate race is considered one of the closest in the country, with significant investments from both parties. A Democrat has not held statewide office in Texas for decades, but Republican divisions and Talarico’s efforts to present himself as a centrist Christian have garnered him a considerable following.

Most polls indicate Talarico is leading Paxton, although the margin has narrowed in recent weeks.
