The Toledo Police Department reported on Saturday evening that at least 12 individuals were shot during a community street festival. Deputy Police Chief Joe Hefferman indicated that it appeared two individuals were likely shooting at each other, with two victims in critical condition. The ages of the victims range from 14 to 61.
The police are currently following up on leads and have requested that the public expect a significant police presence as they investigate the circumstances of the incident. No suspects have been identified at this time.
City Councilwoman Theresa Morris expressed concern, stating that the incident is weighing heavily on residents and festival attendees. Initially, she reported that at least eight people had been shot.
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine expressed his deep concern via social media, emphasizing that summer festivals should be safe spaces for families. He stated, "Fran and I are praying for everyone impacted by the incident at the Old West End Festival, and we are confident that law enforcement will locate the suspects involved in this senseless crime."
The shooting occurred at approximately 5:37 p.m. The Old West End Festival, which features live music and food vendors, is currently in its 53rd year.
