Tesla in Autopilot Mode Crashes into House, Resulting in Fatality

A 76-year-old woman, Martha Avila, was killed when a Tesla Model 3, operated by Michael Butler, crashed into her home in Katy, Texas, on Friday night. The incident occurred around 8 p.m. local time when the vehicle, using an automated driving assistance system, veered off the road and struck the residence. According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, Butler failed to maintain a single lane, leading to the crash. Avila was inside her house when the car crashed through the brick wall and struck her. She was transported to a hospital by medical helicopter but was later pronounced dead. Butler showed no signs of intoxication and is cooperating with the investigation. Sgt. Alex Turman of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office stated that the cause of the vehicle's loss of control is still under evaluation. In 2023, Tesla recalled over 2 million vehicles due to concerns about driver attentiveness while using the autopilot feature. A GoFundMe campaign established in Avila's name has raised over $23,000 as of the publication date.
