Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool Drained for Repairs

Crews began draining the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool on July 11, 2026, as the Trump administration initiated another round of repairs following the nation's 250th anniversary celebration. The repairs were prompted by issues that arose shortly after the initial restoration project was completed last month. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum stated that the work was planned and included the removal of debris from the July Fourth fireworks celebration on the National Mall. Trump had ordered the restoration project earlier this year to refurbish the landmark ahead of the anniversary. The project faced challenges, including an algae bloom and peeling of the new blue coating. U.S. Park Police reported damage at the Reflecting Pool on June 9, indicating that caulk had been misapplied and approximately 70 fence post caps had been thrown into the pool. Former U.S. Olympic canoeist David Hearn has pleaded not guilty to charges related to the damage, claiming he only touched the coating out of curiosity. Three others have also been charged with misdemeanors regarding the pool's coating.
