Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool Drained for Repairs

Crews began draining the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool on July 11, 2026, as the U.S. Department of the Interior initiated repairs following the nation's 250th anniversary celebration. The repairs were prompted by issues that arose after a previous restoration project completed in June 2026, which President Donald Trump attributed to vandalism. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum stated that the latest work was planned and included the removal of debris from the July Fourth fireworks. Burgum noted, "Drain the water, clean up the fireworks stuff, repair the vandalism that was done, fill it back up again." The restoration project had faced challenges, including an algae bloom and peeling of the new coating. Court records revealed that U.S. Park Police responded to reports of damage at the pool on June 9, including vandalism involving caulk and foam sealant. Former U.S. Olympic canoeist David Hearn has pleaded not guilty to charges related to the damage, claiming he only touched the peeling coating out of curiosity. Three others have also been charged with misdemeanors related to the pool's coating.
