Ohio Representative Marcy Kaptur is receiving treatment for non-life threatening injuries following a car accident in Toledo on Sunday morning, according to a statement from her office. Kaptur, 80, was a passenger in a vehicle en route to a church service when it was struck. Her office reported that she is "active, alert" and anticipates returning to her full schedule soon. The House is currently on summer recess, so she was not expected in Washington this week. Kaptur, the longest-serving woman in House history, is engaged in a rematch for her seat against former state Representative Derek Merrin. In the 2024 election, she won by a margin of just over 0.5%, which was close to triggering an automatic recount, with a libertarian candidate receiving approximately 4% of the vote. First responders from the Toledo police and fire departments arrived at the scene promptly, and her office is awaiting further information from the Toledo Police as they investigate the incident. The Toledo Police Department’s traffic division has not yet responded to inquiries regarding the accident.
