Paul St-Pierre Plamondon was elected Quebec’s new premier on Monday as the sovereigntist Parti Québécois won the provincial election, according to BBC projections.
The BBC said the PQ was projected to form a minority government, its first time in power since 2014. Plamondon has pledged to hold a referendum on Quebec’s independence from Canada, a commitment also reported by Al Jazeera. The BBC said he has indicated such a vote would take place after U.S. President Donald Trump leaves office.
The BBC said polls show 30% of Quebecers support independence. Quebec previously held independence referendums in 1980 and 1995. The projected result could bring disagreements with Prime Minister Mark Carney on matters including immigration and the monarchy, the BBC reported.
