Shooting at Minneapolis Apartment Building Results in Two Deaths and Multiple Injuries

At least two civilians were killed and four others were injured, including two police officers, when a gunman opened fire at a downtown Minneapolis apartment building. Minneapolis police received a call at 4:36 PM on Wednesday reporting that one person had been shot at Loring Towers, an affordable housing community, according to Minneapolis Police spokesman Sgt. Garrett Parten during a news conference. Additional calls reporting further gunfire followed shortly after. When police arrived at the scene at 4:39 PM, they found one victim dead and several others suffering from gunshot wounds. Officers followed the sound of gunfire to an upper floor, where they encountered a 'haze' that limited visibility. Officers exchanged gunfire with the suspect, resulting in two officers being shot, while a third sustained a non-life-threatening injury. One officer was shot in the stomach, while the other sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the leg, as reported by KSTP. Both officers are expected to make full recoveries. In total, seven patients were transported to Hennepin County Medical Center, with one later pronounced dead, according to spokesman Jonathan Comito. The officer who was shot in the stomach has undergone surgery and is reported to be in stable condition. The suspect was also killed at the scene, but it remains unclear whether he died due to police gunfire. Photos from the scene depicted a significant police presence, with other emergency officials arriving. Minneapolis police, along with agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, responded to the incident. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz stated that his public safety team was also responding to the shooting, emphasizing that state officials are 'on the ground to support local law enforcement.' By 5:30 PM, agents from the ATF, Hennepin County Sheriff's Office deputies, and Bureau of Criminal Apprehension agents had arrived at the scene. FBI Director Kash Patel announced on social media that agents were responding to the situation and pledged to 'offer any and all resources necessary to assist local authorities.' The nearby University of St. Thomas Minneapolis campus instructed students and staff to shelter in place before giving an all-clear at around 6:15 PM. The Hyatt Regency Minneapolis was also placed on lockdown, which was lifted at around 6:20 PM. Witness Anthony Strong recounted hearing gunfire while smoking behind the apartment building, stating, 'It was pop, pop, pop, pop and it was a bunch more after that, and then I went upstairs.' He described seeing a property manager on the ground and two more individuals shot outside. Another resident, Umecua Agnew, reported being in an elevator when the shooting began and later heard more gunfire from her eighth-floor apartment. Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison described the situation as 'horrifying' in a social media post, expressing condolences for those affected, including the injured police officers. He stated, 'I fully support responding law enforcement and my office will help in all the ways possible.' House Majority Whip Tom Emmer and Minnesota House Speaker Lisa Demuth also expressed their thoughts and prayers for the victims and law enforcement involved in the incident.
